About Us
NEW FUTURES NEPAL (originally known as the ‘Disabled Welfare Association UK’) is a properly constituted UK registered charitable trust. It was established in 2002 by a group of like-minded people who, having spent time trekking in Nepal, wanted to give something back to the people of that country. We were inspired by the charitable work of our trekking guide, Ram Thapa. He was struggling to support a rented home for disabled and orphaned children in Kathmandu. These children and many more like them would face a harsh future in this desperately poor country (in the top 10 poorest countries in the world) without regular financial support and assistance.
We started fund raising and soon realised that we had the ability to make a difference to the lives of some of these children. We persuaded family and friends to fund raise for us, and more importantly, to set up regular standing orders. During our first 12 months we organised ourselves and formed a Trust and started fund raising on a grander scale. The charity obtained UK registered charity status in July 2003.
Our trustees are all volunteers who work with a large team of dedicated friends and supporters. You can see from our accounts that our overheads are kept to a bare minimum. We really try and make sure every penny gets spent on our projects in Nepal. We are very “hands-on”. Each child and adult we help in Nepal is known to us personally – we are passionate about our work and urge you to read on and hopefully be inspired to help.
A trustee visits Nepal at least once a year to oversee our projects and confirm that funds are spent as intended. Annually we monitor and celebrate our progress, update the risk assessments for our current projects and after discussing all the relevant issues, we formulate a detailed strategy for the forthcoming year. Apart from the official visits to Nepal, some of our trustees have visited several times a year at their own expense when undertaking personal holidays.
